Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a radiosurgery technique that uses a high dose of radiation shaped to the patient's tumor. This technique delivers radiation to the intended target while avoiding healthy tissue. Instead of enduring several weeks of conventional radiation therapy, patients receive only one to five radiation treatments. It also carries lower rates of toxicity and side effects. Using computerized planning, doctors deliver high-energy x-ray beams precisely to the tumor targets. SBRT has been found to have distinct advantages over other forms of treatment. Therapy delivery times can often be reduced to less than two minutes per day. Patients usually spend less time in their treatment position and feel less discomfort while in that position. The faster radiation delivery times possible through SBRT reduce the chances that a slight movement from a patient will affect the precision and accuracy of the delivery. Also, SBRT saves healthy tissue from unwanted radiation exposure at rates that are the same or better than other radiotherapy techniques. The most common SBRT treatment site is the lung, but spine, liver, and other sites can also be treated using SBRT.
