3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (CRT)

Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D CRT) is a common radiation therapy used to treat cancers in many parts of the body. 3D CRT utilizes radiation beams that are shaped to enter the patient from multiple angles in such a way that it spares as much healthy tissues as possible. The name "conformal" is derived from the technique of shaping the beams to conform to the shape of the tumor. Patients usually receive these treatments daily for durations of up to seven weeks.

It uses special computers to precisely map the location of the tumor or tumors. Each patient has an initial consultation to determine suitability for radiation treatment. The next step before treatment is simulation, the process of creating the optimal strategy to treat the cancer. Sometimes a custom, immobilization device will be designed to ensure the patient remains still during treatment, then a CT scan is performed to help develop the treatment plan.
