Vulvitis

Vulvitis is temporary inflammation of the vulva, or folds of skin surrounding the vagina, which may occur as a result of allergies, irritants, infections or injury. It also can be caused by various diseases, including vaginitis or genital herpes. Women with high stress levels, poor nutrition, or bad hygiene have a greater risk of vulvitus. Post-menopausal women may be more likely to suffer from vulvitis because the genital tissues become thinner and drier and more prone to irritation. Diabetic women also have a greater risk for vulvitis because high sugar levels increase the likelihood for infection. It can be caused by skin sensitivity, prompted by a reaction to soap, perfume, or other scented products. Although not life-threatening, vulvitis can be irritating and frustrating to diagnose.
