Voice and Breathing Disorders

The UAB Voice and Aero-Digestive Center, part of the UAB Department of Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), provides advanced care for voice, swallowing, and airway problems. We offer the latest diagnostic and treatment methods, both in the office and in the operating room.

Our physicians are nationally and internationally recognized for their experience in evaluating upper airway disorders such as laryngeal and tracheal stenosis. Our Voice Center is the preferred location for voice-related conditions and care of the professional voice in Alabama. As the only facility in Alabama with a fellowship-trained laryngologist, we provide unique care in collaboration with speech pathologists specifically trained in adult and aging voice. Our focus on voice medicine includes whole voice care including video-stroboscopy (a close-up look at the vocal cords and voice box with an endoscope), a thorough physical exam, and voice evaluation. In addition to speech therapy, we provide a variety of treatment options for all aspects of voice care, including many surgical and in-office procedures. Some examples of these in-office procedures include laser treatment and botulinum toxin injections that can be performed without anesthesia.

Patients suffering from voice-related problems due to neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, can be evaluated and treated by a team of highly qualified voice and related specialists. We also have a strong relationship with speech pathologists throughout Alabama, providing a robust referral network to ensure continuity of care and convenience.

Our aero-digestive experts focus on many swallowing disorders, using a variety of tests such as esophagrams, modified barium swallows, pH probe, manometry, and endoscopic evaluations of swallowing function. Again, there are many treatment options, including medical management as well as in-office procedures and, in some cases, surgery.
