Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is one of four main types of leukemia. AML is a cancer that starts in the bone marrow, the spongy inner part of bones where new blood cells are made. AML forms in immature myeloid cells that, if developed normally, would turn into white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets. Instead, these abnormal cells, known as myeloblasts, form and build up, and, as the term "acute" suggests, spread quickly to the blood and other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, brain, spinal cord, liver, spleen, or testicles. If not treated, AML can be fatal within a few months.
