Mother of Two Lost Weight to Gain Energy and Improve Health

LATONYA - BEFORE
LATONYA - AFTER

I am a 35-year-old mother of two. I’ve had weight issues for quite a few years, but within the last three years my weight really seemed to get out of control.

I got married in 2008 and gained a few “happy pounds,” but by 2011 I had tried every diet, pill, and program I could afford. I even had a very painful procedure called mesotherapy while enrolled in Down With The Pounds here in Montgomery. I thought about liposuction and a tummy tuck but knew I couldn’t afford them.

In 2012 I really began to think more seriously about my weight as my health started to decline. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anxiety, and neuropathy in my hands and feet. My family medical history was not the best either; my mother and grandmother both suffer from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and my grandmother also has an enlarged heart. My father and his mother both are insulin-dependent diabetics.

So I started thinking about my life and the fact that at a young age I was very unhealthy and I needed to do something about it. I attended a bariatric seminar in Opelika, Ala., before I discussed weight loss surgery with my doctor. I asked my husband to go with me because I wanted his support and wanted him to understand that I wasn’t just lazy -- I needed help. At this point I was overweight, unhealthy, unhappy, tired all the time, very inactive, and at the point where I had so many different failed attempts at weight loss that I was ready to be radical to keep things from getting worse!

The day of the seminar I decided I was ready to change my life. I knew it would be hard work, but I was ready, and I knew that my life and my family would be worth it. The entire process took one year, including the six-month physician-supervised diet and all of the tests and pre-op procedures. On June 26, 2013, I had gastric bypass surgery, and now four months later I am healthier, more energetic, active, and happier than I have been in a really long time.

I feel like exercising and being active now, when before I wanted to but never had the energy to move. I eat what I should now, and most of the bad foods I craved before I don’t even think about eating now. My husband and children eat healthier, too, and we are all active together.

I am super excited to see how I look and feel once I reach my one-year anniversary and in the years to come. On the day of surgery I weighed 212 pounds; today I weigh 160, I no longer have high blood pressure, and my cholesterol is lower than before surgery.
