Demetrice Lost 100 Pounds to Get Out and Enjoy Life

After years of health issues and ups and downs with my weight, I finally decided to pursue gastric bypass surgery. I tried several times to lose weight on my own and had experienced some success, but nothing long-term.
In 2008, I had a microlaminectomy. I felt that everything would be better after the back surgery, but this was not the case. I could not walk or stand for long periods of time. After the surgery was not successful, the orthopedic surgeon said the next step would be to insert a metal rod in my back. I was often able to stand through Sunday’s service in the choir while we were singing; however other health issues began to mount up. I was taking medication for Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Acid Reflux, and Lortab for chronic back pain. My doctor also had me on a C-PAP machine for sleep apnea.
In January 2009, I decided to seriously pursue bypass surgery. After completing the requirements, which took approximately 6 months in December 2009, I was able to have the surgery. The surgery was a wonderful success. I was taken off the Diabetes medication before being released from the hospital after surgery. At my next visit to my primary care physician, I was taken off all other medications.
Slowly, I started to get back into the swing of life. I was no longer the girl who was known for staying home, but for getting out and enjoying life. I was able to be more active, and the best part is that I do not suffer with back pain any more. I am not a fan of exercise but in 2012 I joined a running group and participated in the 5K at the Junction with the “Black People Run, Bike and Swim” group. This is a group dedicated to promoting fitness awareness in the African American Community.
Around September 2010, I reached the 100 pound weight loss mark. Maintaining weight loss is a constant struggle, but I have never regretted my decision to have surgery. My advice to anyone who is considering surgery would be to follow your heart. Do not listen to the naysayers. Follow your doctor’s advice. Pray about it and GO FOR IT!
