Birmingham Heart Walk Goes Virtual
During the corona virus pandemic, arranging events and gatherings for social distancing can make getting involved a challenge, or even limit the number of participants. However, that is definitely not the case for the virtual version of Birmingham Heart Walk. Participation in this fundraising event can take place anywhere you can move.
Heart Walk is the American Heart Association's premier national event that brings communities together to promote heart-healthy living and raise money for research and educational programs. The Birmingham Heart Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, and this year’s virtual version takes place wherever participants happen to be.
As a science-based organization, the American Heart Association follows guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local health officials regarding coronavirus safety. For that reason, Heart Walk organizers encourage participants to use their imaginations for selecting a safe “route” this year. For example, participants can walk outdoors on a favorite path, or indoors on a treadmill. But rather than walking in total isolation, participants can share selfies, make comments, and follow others on #BhamHeartWalk social media pages during the event.
Funds raised from the event support the fight against the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death: heart disease and stroke. Funds raised by the local event also support important cardiovascular research at UAB.
Birmingham Heart Walk is a free, family-friendly event. Check-in begins Saturday, June 13, at 8 am, and the walk starts at 9 am.
In past years, UAB Medicine has provided hydration stations at certain points on the downtown route to help participants keep vital fluids flowing. There’s no actual hydration station this year, but as the official hydration sponsor for the virtual event, UAB supports the American Heart Association’s “Rethink your Drink” campaign, which provides thirsty walkers with tips about heart-healthy beverages. Learn how to switch from sugary drinks to beverages that will quench your thirst and still taste good here.
