The UAB Comprehensive Smell and Taste Clinic was created to help patients suffering from smell and taste loss due to COVID-19 and other conditions, including facial and head trauma, neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, and conditions of unknown origin. Opened in early 2023 and the first of its kind in Alabama, the clinic is staffed by otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors, or ENTs), advanced practice providers, and nurses, as well as specialists in neurology, infectious disease, radiology, and other areas. The clinic provides a full range of evaluation and testing services, along with nasal exams when necessary. Patients receive a complete treatment plan that is personalized to their condition, including counseling and referrals to other specialists as needed.
The clinic is starting a support group for affected patients to raise awareness, share information, and help guide research into smell and taste loss. Estimates suggest that over 60% of people who get the COVID-19 virus are affected by smell and/or taste loss, and about 46% report long-term smell loss. In Alabama, at least 500,000 people have experienced ongoing smell and/or taste loss since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. To schedule an appointment with the UAB Comprehensive Smell and Taste Clinic, please call 205-801-7801 and choose option 3.
