UAB Medicine joins national observation recognizing CMAs

Oct. 23 is National Medical Assistants Day, which highlights the important work that certified medical assistants (CMAs) do in clinics and hospitals nationwide. Join UAB Medicine in recognizing the excellence of our own CMA staff and their crucial role in our mission to deliver the highest quality, most compassionate care possible.

CMAs are key partners to our world-class physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses. They provide essential support to clinical, nursing, and administrative functions in our outpatient offices and clinics and help ensure an excellent patient experience.

They also carry out numerous administrative tasks – such as organizing and maintaining patient records – and they take on a variety of clinical nursing support responsibilities, including prepping patients for exams, performing basic lab tests, and obtaining medical histories. The 400-plus CMAs at UAB Medicine ensure that our internal processes run smoothly.

Indispensable team members

Jaye Locks, associate vice president of Community Based Practices and Employee Health, recognizes the important role CMAs play on the health care team. “CMAs are the heartbeat of the ambulatory side of medicine,” she said. “They are indispensable to providing care, and our clinics would not be able to operate without them.”

Watch the video below to hear from team members across UAB Medicine Ambulatory Services as they express gratitude for CMAs and share their thoughts on the impact CMAs have across the organization.

Associate Vice President of Ambulatory Services Andrea Boohaker says CMAs are an integral part of the care provided at UAB Medicine.

“Their unique skill sets and expertise are augmented by their ability to provide compassionate care to our communities,” she said. “Our service lines become more efficient with their involvement, and they influence the delivery of care provided to our patients. During this special week, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for their innumerable contributions to our institution.”

Brittany Stallworth, MSN, RN-BC, manager of the Geriatrics, Infectious Disease, Travelers Health, and Genetics clinics at UAB Medicine, agrees that CMAs are an invaluable asset to the ambulatory environment at UAB Medicine.

“CMAs are the eyes and ears of keeping our clinics flowing,” she said. “I’ve learned so much from our CMAs in my transition from inpatient to outpatient. I’m grateful to be surrounded by such an amazing group of hardworking employees. I appreciate their dedication to our patients, support staff, providers, and leaders.”
