UAB Hospital was again named the best hospital in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report, and Rehabilitation now ranks No. 19 nationally among adult specialties in the 2023-2024 ‘Best Hospital’ list released in August. UAB Rehabilitation moved up one spot from No. 20 in last year’s ranking.

Rehabilitation is one of eight adult specialties at UAB that are ranked among the best in the nation. Other specialties include Cardiology & Heart Surgery; Diabetes & Endocrinology; Ear, Nose & Throat; Gastroenterology & GI Surgery; Geriatrics; Obstetrics & Gynecology; and Rheumatology.

“We are proud that UAB Rehabilitation continues to be nationally recognized among the very best rehabilitation providers in the country. Our focus on high quality rehabilitation care, superior learning environment, and cutting edge research serve the singular goal of optimizing the functional outcome and health for all of those we serve,” stated Dr. Vu Nguyen, chair of UAB’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

UAB Hospital is one of just a few centers recognized as having both Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems as well as being a National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC). The NSCISC is the world’s largest and longest active SCI research database and the world’s most extensive source of available information about the characteristics and life course of individuals with SCI.

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions; only 12% of evaluated hospitals earned a Best Hospitals ranking. Hospitals awarded a “Best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, level of nursing care, and patient experience.
