UAB Hospital was rated as “high-performing” – the highest level possible – in U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals for Maternity Care survey for 2022-2023.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) published a study in Circulation showing that, among ventricular assist device recipients, patients with a particular form of dilated cardiomyopathy known as familial dilated cardiomyopathy have better clinical outcomes compared with other forms of the disease.

Good communication between doctors and patients is important, but patients connected to a ventilator for breathing cannot speak. Thanks to a team of respiratory therapists and speech pathologists at UAB Medicine, some of these patients are getting their voice back, making it possible to talk to loved ones again and more easily participate in their care.

The UAB Medicine Human Resources recruitment team has been busy attending recruitment events of all kinds this year – for nurses and pharmacy technicians to events for radiologic technologists, physical therapists, and everything in between. Everyone has been eager to get back out into the community to recruit face to face with potential candidates, marking a welcome change from the virtual events conducted during the first two years of the pandemic.

UAB Nurse Wellness Manager Toni Beam, MSN, RN, NE-BC, has a deep understanding of the demands placed on nursing services staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, and an even deeper commitment to supporting their well-being throughout their careers. “As frontline healthcare providers, our nursing services staff felt the full weight of COVID. They watched a novel virus unfold while having to develop and implement new policies and procedures, and grapple with PPE shortages and the reprocessing of N95 masks,” she says. “It wore them down in many ways.”
