Is your daughter (or a girl under your care) prepared for the physical, psychological, and social changes that come with puberty? It can be a challenging time, but Girl Talk sessions can help.
Hosted regularly by nurses at the UAB Women & Infants Center, the roughly 90-minute sessions set the stage for healthy habits and behaviors and emphasize the importance of relying on trusted adults for guidance. Mothers or guardians and their daughters age 8-12 attend together to form a stronger bond.
What does a typical Girl Talk session include?
- UAB Women & Infants Center nurses present facts about puberty and lead discussions.
- Conversations about growing up, held in a relaxed environment with peers and adults
- A sense of openness between girls and their parents/guardians, making it normal to talk about anything
- Activities that promote knowledge and encourage reflection, including exercises that can be done at home
- Free parking and cookies!
What do participants have to say about Girl Talk?
- “My daughter and I had already scratched the surface about puberty, body changes, etc. So, I felt this would be beneficial for her to learn more and feel confident as she ages.”
- “I wanted someone to cover some aspects of puberty with my daughter that I might miss.”
- “The nurse was down to earth, genuine, and very professional. She spoke in a way that was easy to understand, for both the girls and the parents.”
- “The interactive parts about using tampons and pads were important. It’s an important topic that I do think parents need to talk about.”
- “I definitely recommend this to friends, because it’s so important to educate, remove barriers to conversation, find support, and minimize shame around topics associated with puberty and adolescence.”
