Congratulations to the most recent winner, Jessica Riddle, RN. Below, a colleague explains what makes Jessica worthy of a DAISY Award.

My adult child was brought to the Emergency Department (ED) with a high heart rate due to her heart condition. My child has had issues with this before; however, she recently had surgery to help and had not had a problem since then. When my child arrived at the ED, Jessica immediately took action. When I arrived, my child was scared and crying, and mentioned that she had never felt like this before.

Another team member came to get my child for a CT scan, which caused her anxiety to increase. Jessica refused to leave her side and stayed with her the whole time. When they returned Jessica made sure we were both comfortable and even offered to get us some refreshments.

Later that evening when my daughter’s phone died, Jessica let my daughter FaceTime her children from her personal cell phone. When I came back the next day and my daughter was still in the ED, I learned that Jessica came back to check on her when she did not have to.

I will always sing praises for Jessica. Even while dealing with a difficult patient nearby, she did not let it affect her. She will always have a place in this mother’s heart, and she means the world to my daughter. UAB Medicine has a great nurse and some amazing emergency doctors as well. Thank you to all of you, but especially Jessica and my child’s doctor that day.
