UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella, MSHA, CPA, was appointed by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey to the executive committee of the newly formed Alabama Workforce Board. This prestigious position reflects Bulgarella’s exceptional contributions and dedication to workforce development.

Earlier this year, Gov. Ivey and the Alabama Legislature merged the Alabama Workforce Council and the State Workforce Development Board into a single entity, with the goal of streamlining workforce development efforts and enhancing the impact of related programs. This consolidation created the Alabama Workforce Board, which is designed to be the leading advisory body on job creation and training initiatives across the state.

In an official statement, Gov. Ivey expressed her confidence in the newly appointed board members, saying, “I am proud to assemble a group of some of our state’s business and industry leaders to work with us as we streamline our workforce development efforts. While we have made progress in increasing our state’s low labor force participation rate, there is still much to accomplish, and we are well on our way to doing that.”

In addition to Bulgarella, the executive committee includes five other distinguished Alabama leaders:

  • Tom Hand – chairman and CEO of Volkert Inc.
  • Jeff Peoples – chairman, CEO, and president of Alabama Power Co.
  • Cathy Randall, Ph.D. – philanthropist and business leader
  • Phil Webb – owner of Webb Concrete and Building Materials
  • Lamar Whitaker – vice president and plant lead of Honda Development & Manufacturing of America LLC’s Alabama Auto Plant

The Alabama Workforce Board also includes 38 board members, all of whom are leaders in their fields and bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. The board’s primary focus is to improve the state’s labor participation rate, which at 57.5% in June was below the national rate of 62.7%.

Congratulations to Dawn on this well-deserved appointment, which will help drive workforce development initiatives that benefit all Alabamians.
