About

The UAB Medicine Neurosurgery at Greystone clinic provides the absolute latest expertise and technology for evaluating conditions of the brain and spine. Now part of UAB Medicine, the established clinic is led by Thomas A. Staner, MD, one of the few neurological specialists in the country who is board-certified in both neurosurgery and neurology. He has more than 35 years of experience in micro-neurosurgery and minimally invasive surgery of the spine and brain.

Dr. Thomas Staner sees patients all day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and in the morning on Thursdays. Patients are also seen by Nurse Practitioner Kristen Betts, CRNP, who has a background in critical care and managing chronically ill patients with multiple conditions and complications.

Patient Information

When you come to your first appointment, please bring the films or CDs containing all previous MRI, CAT scan, and myelogram tests you may have had. During your initial visit you will be asked about your medical history and symptoms, then your doctor will complete a focused neurological examination.

Patients often want to discuss in great detail the exact event that may have caused their injury or condition, but the most important information your health care team needs involves your symptoms, including where you have pain, weakness, numbness, etc. They also will want to know what limitations these symptoms place on your everyday activities. Please take the time to consider and write down this information before your initial appointment.

After reviewing your medical history and diagnostic tests, you will be presented with a number of treatment options. We will inform you of the risks and benefits of each option and will assist you in making a final decision concerning which treatment option is best for you.

The Patient’s Role

You are the only one who can decide which treatment is best for you. It is important for you to recognize that you have a responsibility to participate in your case and take ownership of decisions involving your health care. You will be asked to make a final decision regarding what is best for you, so please feel free to ask questions about anything you do not understand.

Your family and close friends may also be an important part of the process. We encourage you to include them in any education sessions concerning your condition. Deciding which treatment option is best for you involves weighing the risks and benefits associated with each option. You should have realistic goals — and be willing to work steadily to achieve those goals.
