UAB named Alabama’s most socially responsible hospital

UAB Hospital

UAB Hospital earned the No. 1 spot in Alabama on the 2024-25 “Lown Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility”, a report published annually by the Lown Institute. This ranking reflects our “A” grades in the three primary categories – outcomes, value, and equity – and it places UAB within the top 20% of U.S. hospitals.

UAB Hospital also was named No. 1 in Alabama in the value category, recognizing our efforts to promote quality over cost efficiency and avoid using low-value services, including clinical tests that offer little to no benefit. Furthermore, UAB earned “A” grades in the subcategories of inclusivity, cost efficiency, and clinical outcomes, and we were ranked among the top five hospitals in Alabama for clinical outcomes, avoiding overuse, and cost efficiency.

The Lown Institute is an independent health care thinktank. Its fifth-annual report examined over 3,500 U.S. hospitals and 300 health systems and bills itself as “the nation’s only comprehensive measure of hospital social responsibility.” Hospitals are evaluated on 53 metrics that contribute to the overall social responsibility ranking. Importantly, the Lown Index is an independent analysis, and hospitals do not apply to be graded or ranked.
