UAB Hospital was once again named the best hospital in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report, in its 2023-2024 Best Hospital rankings, released today. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital also claims the No. 1 ranking as the best hospital in the Birmingham metro area.
In addition to the hospital’s local and statewide distinction, eight adult specialties are ranked among the best in the nation, and UAB Hospital was ranked as “high-performing” in 17 of 21 assessed adult procedures/conditions.
“UAB Hospital receiving a ranking of the best hospital in both Birmingham and Alabama is a testament to the tremendous level of expertise among physicians and care teams within UAB Medicine, and a quality of care that can’t be found elsewhere,” said Dawn Bulgarella, CEO of UAB Health System. “Having a significant number of specialties and procedures recognized in this year’s list is a mark that the consistent excellence of our patient care and the innovative therapies offered here continue to make UAB a key health care destination.”
Ranked programs include rheumatology at No. 10 and obstetrics and gynecology at No. 13. Other ranked specialties are ear, nose and throat at No. 15; rehabilitation at No. 19; cardiology, heart & vascular surgery at No. 39; diabetes and endocrinology at No. 44; geriatrics at No. 47; and gastroenterology & gi surgery at No. 50.
Five programs, cancer, pulmonology/lung surgery, neurology/neurosurgery, urology, and orthopedics, were classified as high-performing.
U.S. News also rates hospitals in 21 adult procedures/conditions. UAB Hospital was rated as “high-performing,” the highest classification, in 17 areas: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, COPD, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, kidney failure, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, lung cancer surgery, ovarian cancer surgery, pneumonia, prostate cancer surgery, stroke, transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR, and uterine cancer surgery.
With this year’s rankings, rheumatology has been nationally ranked for the last 20 consecutive years.
These rankings come on the heels of UAB Medicine’s welcoming almost 2 million patient visits last year, as the organization continues to expand its presence throughout the state to improve access to health care for Alabamians.
