The 1917 Clinic is proud to announce the grand opening of its new location, scheduled to open to the public on Dec. 15, 2020. Being renamed The 1917 Clinic at Dewberry, this UAB Medicine Specialty Care clinic will continue providing the same high standard of medical care, social services, outreach, and prevention services to adult patients living with or at risk for HIV.

The 1917 Clinic at Dewberry is nestled in Birmingham’s historic Lakeview District at 3320 5th Avenue South, in the former Dewberry Building. It offers plenty of free, on-site parking to help patients more easily access the care they need.

The spacious, 50,664-square-foot facility is a significant upgrade, nearly tripling the size of the clinic’s previous location. In addition to a full UAB pharmacy, the new location will feature a resource center for patients that offers computer and Internet access, a teaching kitchen, a fitness area, and more. The building also will be the new home for the Magic City Wellness Center, which was created by Birmingham AIDS Outreach in 2016 and provides primary care medical services to LGBTQ individuals and their allies.

Founded in 1988, the 1917 Clinic is the largest HIV health care unit in Alabama and one of the country’s leading HIV clinics. Currently serving more than 3,600 active patients, the staff at the 1917 Clinic are pleased to have the opportunity to grow to meet the needs of their patients.

“The relocation of the 1917 Clinic is one that will dramatically increase the services we will be able to deliver to our patients, including a new, state-of-the-art environment in which we can provide outpatient care,” says clinic Director James Raper, PhD, CRNP.

The 1917 Clinic receives funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act, which helps provide care for low-income, uninsured, and under-insured adults living with HIV, regardless of any pre-existing or non-HIV-related conditions. Patients can receive services regardless of their ability to pay.
