COVID-19 Vaccinations and Booster Shots

Thank you for your interest in receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. Learn more about the vaccine, safety, and other important information below including answers to the most common questions.

At this time, everyone age 5 and older is eligible for vaccination. UAB Medicine provides the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in our injection clinic locations. Please see the chart below for guidance on timing and booster shots.

Primary Vaccination Series	2 doses, 3 weeks apart*	2 doses, 3-8 weeks apart*
Severely Immunocompromised	Children ages 5 through 11 years who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a primary series of 3 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine with the second doses given 3 weeks after 1st dose, and the 3rd dose given at least 4 weeks after the 2nddose. Not eligible for a booster dose.	People ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a total of 3 vaccination doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The second dose should be given 3 weeks after the 1st dose and the 3rd dose given at least 4 weeks after the second dose. Eligible for up to two booster doses.

Severely Immunocompromised

Children ages 5 through 11 years who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a primary series of 3 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine with the second doses given 3 weeks after 1st dose, and the 3rd dose given at least 4 weeks after the 2nddose. Not eligible for a booster dose.

People ages 12 years and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should receive a total of 3 vaccination doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The second dose should be given 3 weeks after the 1st dose and the 3rd dose given at least 4 weeks after the second dose. Eligible for up to two booster doses.

Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for teens ages 12-17
Either Pfizer BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for people ages 18+

Adults ages 50+ can choose to receive a second booster at least 4 months after their first booster.

People ages 12 through 64 years, and especially males ages 12 through 39 years, may consider getting the second dose of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) 8 weeks after the first dose. A longer time between the first and second doses may increase how much protection the vaccines offer, and further minimize the already rare risk of heart problems, including myocarditis and pericarditis.
People ages 5 through 11 years, people ages 65 years and older, people more likely to very sick from COVID-19, or anyone wanting protection due to high levels of community transmission should get the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine 3 weeks (or 21 days) after the first dose, or the second dose of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine 4 weeks (or 28 days) after the first dose.

UAB Medicine currently provides COVID-19 vaccines for our employees, patients, and the community. UAB Medicine patients, employees, and community members may visit one of the injection clinics to receive their vaccination or booster shot. The UAB Injection Clinic on the second floor of The Kirklin Clinic is open weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm. The UAB Injection Clinic in the TKC parking deck (in the former Regions Bank space) at 539 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. South is open weekdays from 7 am to 3 pm.
