Callahan Ophthalmologists Named Among Top Women in Medicine

Each year, the Birmingham lifestyle magazine B-Metro compiles its list of the top women in medicine in the Birmingham area. Included in the 2020 list are UAB Callahan Eye Hospital & Clinics ophthalmologists Virginia R. Lolley, MD, and Ann Marie Arciniegas-Bernal, MD. 

Dr. Lolley is an assistant professor in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. In 2019, she became the first female chief of staff for UAB Callahan Eye Hospital.

One of Callahan Eye Hospital’s top five surgeons based on patient volume, Dr. Lolley has worked as a comprehensive ophthalmologist at UAB for more than 20 years. She served as president of Callahan Eye Hospital from 2013 to 2015 and is the former director of undergraduate medical education for the department. Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, she is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Lolley has been selected as one of the “Best Doctors in America” yearly since 2007 and was one of Birmingham magazine’s “Best of Birmingham” in 2016.

“I appreciate B-Metro’s recognition,” Dr. Lolley says. “But I depend on the support of my team in the office and in the operating room to help me deliver the best possible care to every patient. I love my job!”

Dr. Arciniegas-Bernal recently was promoted to associate professor in the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. This past year, she also assumed the role of director of the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus. She has been with the department for 10 years. Her clinical practice is focused on providing comprehensive pediatric ophthalmology care and adult strabismus evaluations and treatments.

A Birmingham native, Dr. Arciniegas-Bernal is board-certified in ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology.
