Cystic fibrosis (CF) primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, but breathing problems cause the most serious issues for those suffering from the disease. This life-threatening, inherited (genetic) condition causes thick mucus to build up in the body’s organs, especially the lungs and pancreas. The cells responsible for producing mucus, sweat, and digestive juices change those bodily fluids from thin, slippery secretions to ones that are thick and sticky. As a result, the lungs become clogged with mucus, making it difficult to breathe. Bacteria also can get trapped in the lungs, causing serious infections. In the pancreas, the mucus interferes with the organ’s normal function of helping the body digest food.
